This shape of this diminutive porcelain vessel is based on Eastern precedents and the brown-red glaze may also be related to the Chinese red known as sang de boeuf (oxblood) that was universally copied with varying degrees of success. The applied ornamentation of stylized darker brown snakes coiled at the belly of the vase and rising upward to the rim, is somewhat ambiguous, having both biomorphic and erotic connotations.
