Traditional in form, this charming vase is hand-painted with stylized flowers, stems, and buds that recall embroidered Persian textiles. The surface, luster glazed over a golden pearlized ground, resembles those of ancient, iridized ceramics. A miniature egg and dart border at the rim is a reference to antiquity. While a prisoner in Hungary during WorldWar I, Pietro Melandri became familiar with Vienna Secession ceramics and created his first pieces. In 1918, after returning to Italy, he established the ceramics atelier where this nostalgic vase was formed and fired.
Marks: Painted artist's initials and cipher, Faenza, made in Italy.
