The Manufacture de Sèvres has specialized in the creation of ceramic objects for over three centuries. This porcelain coupe is an example of the kind of objects produced at the turn of the 20th century. Its elegant shape consists of a bowl supported by an inverted trumpet-shaped base. The use of porcelain accentuates the finesse of the piece and echoes the motifs painted on its surface – yellow water lilies and stylized ripples on a light blue background. A simple painted pattern resembling lotus flowers covers the base of the object. The coupe plays on surface decoration to enhance texture, and thus to create dynamism.
