Bernhard Hoetger was a German Expressionist sculptor, painter and craftsman, whose constantly evolving style contributed to establish his reputation as an artist. He was however trained as a sculptor and finished his studies in 1900, the year this bronze sculpture was completed. His Nymph with a Hoop demonstrates a strong mastery of bronze as a medium and a sense of space and form, which place Hoetger among the best sculptors of his generation. The soft treatment of the figure’s body, her wavy hair and delicate pose make this piece delightful. The hoop, which she holds behind her, adds a graphic element to the composition, providing a sense of overall structure to the work.
