Period Art Nouveau
Country of Origin France
Year Made C. 1900
Designed by Ernest Bussière and produced by the Luneville firm of Keller & Guerin, this stunning vase exemplifies the Art Nouveau emphasis on stylized organic shapes. Both the sculptural treatment and the unusual blending of purple and green mat glazes are naturalistic in form. Although known as the Artichoke Vase, the piece appears as an alien form in a process of rapid growth. Bussière has admirably succeeded in exploiting the plasticity of the clay rather than confining it to a simple outline.
