This large vase designed by Eduard Stellmacher for Amphora features a motif that permeates the work of Amphora ceramists - bats. It is an impressive piece, of substantial size, which features three bats on the neck of the vase. They are depicted with frightening intensity, as though they might overcome the stillness of their medium and come to life. Stellmacher went beyond the more discreet bat motifs introduced by Paul Daschel in the early 1890s, thus truly turning this vase into a piece of sculpture in its own right.
