In the case of this chair we see clearly that Kinsarvik’s skill at furniture design is not only matched by his woodworking ability, by his formidable eye for color. Kinsarvik's chairs are excellent examples of the Viking style, developed to celebrate Norwegian cultural identity in the late nineteenth century. The structural elements, resembling ancient staffs and staves linked by mortise and tenon joints, are decorated with low relief carvings of masks and weavings picked out in vivid hues of blue and yellow. A similar model was exhibited in Paris in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle.
