First exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 Russian sculptor Séraphin Soudbinine worked in Paris making grès flammés through the 1940s. The rarity of his remarkable work has afforded him cult status among collectors of Art Deco. Drawing from his Japoniste roots while working with Jeanneney and Dalpayrat, this vase, with its clear influence of Asian protoypes, is decorated with jade green glazed fishes carved into the shoulder above an exuberant frieze. The covered ginger jar form sits proudly on a base and has two delicate handles that grace the shoulder. A playful jade green carp playfully springs from the lid.
