Emile Decoeur’s Oxblood Handled Vase was produced in 1910, a time of ongoing and confident experimentation for the artist. As Decoeur moved away temporarily from the use of flambé glazes in this period, his experimentation came in the form of increasingly dripped and textured color. In this vase, Decoeur has contrasted areas of bright blue and purplish red – the eponymous oxblood – against areas of more muted browns and mottled creams. The form of the handled vase itself is large, with a low, wide silhouette that narrows only slightly at the neck. Interestingly raised lines curve at an angle around the vase’s widest point.
