Press Release

“A rolling stone gathers no moss” is a proverb dating back to the first century BC, which meant to say that those who are always moving, with no roots in one place or another, may avoid responsibilities and cares. It has commonly been reinterpreted to mean that a person must remain on the go to avoid stagnation. Yet perhaps it is the meaning and symbolism of moss, most resilient and humble of plant-matter, and not the stone upon which we ought to focus.

At this year’s iteration of Jason Jacques Gallery’s fantastical fair booth, the verdant word of Finnish sculptor Kim Simonsson shall come into focus through a series of new pieces by Simonsson which will make their debut at Design Miami 2019. The figures’ gazes and gestures, as if suspended in time, capture a sense of the ephemeral. They seem to carry within themselves both the memory of things past as well as a solemn and contemplative eye towards the future, but in their subtle vivacity, they do not give over to fatalist visions of things to come. There is an overarching sense of both enchantment and the meditative luxury of art and expression.

Design Miami will run from Monday June 10th to Sunday June 16th.
