Born in Japan’s Fukui Prefecture, Osamu Kojima has spent nearly two decades working with clay. Contrary to popular assumptions about his work, Kojima’s sculptures are not exclusively inspired by natural landscapes and scenery, but also by the products of the human hand. "My most recent work consists of a contemporary landscape that evokes memories of the past,” explains the artist. "Used stones are an image that I use as a symbol of technology created by civilizations throughout time." His masterful use of clay, glass, and glaze contribute to deliberately blur the boundaries between the organic and the man-made.
Kojima is a graduate of the Kyoto Seika University in Kyoto and the Tainan National University of the Arts, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts. He is the recipient of the 2016 Grand Prize at the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale and a Bronze medal at the 10th International Ceramics Exhibition in Gifu, Japan. His work is held in the collections of the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Shumei Cultural Foundation in Shiga, Japan, and Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana.
